Uses of wollastonite powder

With the advancement of the times, I’m sure chemists are no strangers to this material. So, what exactly is wollastonite powder? Wollastonite’s chemical formula is CaSiO3, and its theoretical chemical composition is 48.25% CaO and 51.75% SiO2. Pure wollastonite is rare in nature; during its formation, calcium (Ca) is sometimes partially replaced by ions such as Fe, Mn, Ti, and Sr, resulting in solid-solution minerals. Additionally, it often contains small amounts of aluminum (Al) as well as trace amounts of potassium (K) and sodium (Na). So, how much do you know about the specifics of wollastonite powder? To help you better understand wollastonite powder, I’ve prepared the following summary.
The uses of wollastonite powder are as follows:
Wollastonite crystals exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet irradiation and can also display phosphorescence. It is primarily used in industries such as ceramics, coatings, plastics, and rubber.
Wollastonite powder features needle-like and fibrous crystal morphologies, high whiteness, and unique physicochemical properties. It is widely used in ceramics, paints, coatings, plastics, rubber, chemical industry, papermaking, welding electrodes, metallurgical fluxes, and as a substitute for asbestos, among other applications.
In the plastics industry, wollastonite powder not only serves as a filler but can also partially replace asbestos and glass fibers in reinforcing materials. Currently, it has been widely used in various types of plastics, including epoxy, phenolic, thermosetting polyester, and polyolefin resins. Wollastonite powder and its deeply processed derivatives are extensively employed in plastic products. As a plastic filler, it is primarily used to enhance tensile strength and flexural strength while reducing costs.
In the rubber industry, natural wollastonite powder features a unique needle-like structure and is white and non-toxic. After ultrafine grinding and surface modification, it becomes an ideal filler for rubber. Not only does it help reduce the production costs of rubber products, but it also enhances the mechanical properties of rubber and imparts special functionalities that rubber itself does not possess.
In the coatings industry, wollastonite powder, when used as a filler in paints and coatings, can enhance the physicochemical properties of products, improve their durability and weather resistance, reduce the glossiness of paints, increase the extensibility of coatings, minimize cracking, and lower oil absorption while boosting corrosion resistance. Wollastonite boasts a bright color and high reflectivity, making it ideal for producing high-quality white paints as well as clear, transparent colored paints. Needle-shaped wollastonite powder exhibits excellent flatness, high color coverage, and uniform distribution, and it also possesses UV-resistant properties. It is widely used in interior wall coatings, exterior wall coatings, specialty coatings, and latex paints. The finer the particle size, the higher the whiteness and pH value, the better the color performance and application properties of the paint; moreover, since these paints are alkaline, they can serve as anti-corrosion coatings for metal equipment such as steel structures.
In the papermaking industry, wollastonite powder can be used as a filler and compounded with plant fibers to produce composite paper fibers that partially replace traditional plant fibers. This reduces the amount of wood pulp required, lowers costs, improves paper performance, enhances paper smoothness and opacity, improves paper uniformity, eliminates static electricity in the paper, minimizes paper shrinkage, and improves printability. Additionally, it helps reduce pollutant emissions during the pulping process of plant fibers.
The above is my summary of wollastonite powder. Since I’m not very familiar with this field, my summary may have quite a few shortcomings. However, overall, it still proves to be somewhat useful. If you’d like to learn more about wollastonite powder, feel free to give us a call anytime!
