Application fields of wollastonite


Wollastonite has the chemical formula Ca3[Si3O9]. It crystallizes in the triclinic system and belongs to the single-chain silicate mineral group. It typically occurs in flaky, radial, or fibrous aggregates. Its color is white with a slight grayish tinge. It exhibits a vitreous luster and pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. Its hardness ranges from 4.5 to 5.0. Cleavage is perfect parallel to {100} and moderate parallel to {001}; the angle between these two cleavage planes is 74°. Its density is 2.78 to 2.91 grams per cubic centimeter. Wollastonite is primarily found in contact metamorphic zones where acidic intrusive rocks come into contact with limestone, serving as a major mineral constituent of skarns. Additionally, it can also be found in certain deeply metamorphosed rocks. Wollastonite is used as a raw material or filler in industries such as papermaking, ceramics, cement, rubber, and plastics; as a gas filtration material and thermal insulation material; and as a fluxing agent in metallurgy. The application fields of wollastonite are as follows:
After undergoing a special processing technique, paper-grade wollastonite powder retains its unique needle-like structure. When added to whiteboard paper, this wollastonite powder enhances the paper’s whiteness, opacity (surface coverage), flatness, smoothness, and adaptability, while reducing variations in basis weight and minimizing wet deformation of the paperboard. It also improves the paper’s printability and significantly reduces thedosage of other raw materials, thereby lowering the overall cost of paper products.
Adding an appropriate amount of ceramic-grade wollastonite powder to ceramic raw materials can significantly reduce the firing temperature, shorten the firing time, and enable low-temperature, rapid single-firing. This approach substantially saves fuel and markedly lowers product costs. At the same time, it enhances the mechanical properties of the products, reduces cracking and warping, increases glaze gloss, boosts the strength of the body, and ultimately improves the product’s qualification rate.
Wollastonite can be used to manufacture brake pads, ceramic glazes, and other products, and is widely applied in industrial sectors such as automotive, metallurgy, ceramics, and plastics. Among these, the engineering plastics industry currently holds the most promising outlook for wollastonite consumption. As a filler and reinforcing agent in the plastics and rubber industries, wollastonite is increasingly replacing metal components in industrial finished products, leading to rapid growth in market demand.
Thanks to improvements in processing techniques and the availability of ultrafine particles, new potential applications for wollastonite are being discovered one after another, thereby expanding its range of uses. According to forecasts by foreign experts, the future distribution of wollastonite application areas will be as follows: 6% in the ceramics industry and related sectors; 22% in coatings, plastics, and decorative materials; 5% as an asbestos substitute; 12% in insulating ceramic foams for everyday insulation products; 6% in insulating ceramic foams for construction; 2% in fire-resistant insulating ceramic foams; 4% in ceramic foams for casting production; 3% in surface coatings for slag-concrete blocks; and 40% in paper manufacturing.
Coating
It exhibits excellent reinforcing properties, enhancing both the toughness and durability of coatings while maintaining a smooth coating surface and superior gloss. Moreover, it improves resistance to scrubbing and weathering, reduces oil absorption in both coatings and inks, and helps maintain alkalinity, thereby providing corrosion resistance. This results in high-quality coatings with bright, vivid colors, as well as excellent leveling and anti-aging performance. Consequently, the coatings achieve enhanced mechanical strength, increased durability, improved adhesion, and superior corrosion resistance. Additionally, they offer excellent coverage and adhesion.
Plastic rubber
It features unique needle-like fibers that exhibit excellent insulation properties, wear resistance, and a relatively high refractive index. It serves as an excellent filler material for plastics and rubber products. Characteristics and Performance: Wollastonite powder can enhance impact strength, improve flowability, and boost tensile strength, impact resistance, linear elongation, and mold shrinkage.
Friction
It is a special needle-like structure that also exhibits the unique physico-mechanical properties of wollastonite. This significantly enhances the finished product's resistance to friction and heat. When incorporated into products, it improves characteristics such as friction flexibility and stability.
Papermaking
Even after undergoing special processing techniques, it retains its unique needle-like structure, enabling whiteboard paper containing wollastonite powder to achieve higher whiteness, opacity (surface coverage), flatness, smoothness, and adaptability. It also reduces variations in basis weight and minimizes wet deformation of the cardboard, enhancing its printability. Moreover, this process significantly lowers the consumption of various other raw materials, thereby reducing the overall cost of paper products.
Building materials
With advantages such as being non-toxic, odorless, and non-radioactive, wollastonite is gradually replacing asbestos—material that poses health risks to humans—and is emerging as a new environmentally friendly building material for the new century. After undergoing special processing techniques, it retains its unique needle-like structure, significantly enhancing the impact resistance, flexural strength, and wear resistance of materials such as silicate-calcium boards and fire-resistant boards when wollastonite needle-shaped powder is added. In the field of construction materials, wollastonite will be used more extensively.
Ceramics
